Focus on non-verbal communication

Nonverbal communication can be even more powerful than the words we use. 40% to 50% of all communication is nonverbal, and studies have shown that we often trust nonverbal communication more than verbal communication. The way you move, the way you speak, and the way you look can all send messages to the people around you.

It’s important to be aware of your nonverbal signals and make sure they’re sending the right message. For example, if you’re trying to appear confident, stand up straight and make eye contact. If you’re trying to come across as warm and friendly, smile and use open body language. Nonverbal communication is a powerful tool, so make sure you’re using it to your advantage.

Manage your own emotions

One of the most important things you can do when communicating with others is to manage your own emotions. When you’re in a good headspace, it’s a lot easier to have a positive interaction with others. Stay calm, cool and collected and you’ll be able to communicate effectively without raising your voice or becoming defensive. On the other hand, if you’re feeling angry, frustrated or upset, it’s best to take a break before continuing the conversation. This will help ensure that the discussion stays productive and doesn’t escalate into an argument. Remember: it’s always important to think before you speak!

Ask for feedback

Asking for feedback is an essential part of communication. It shows that you’re interested in understanding the other person’s perspective and that you’re willing to work together to find a solution. When you’re asking for feedback, be specific about what you’re looking for. For example, if you’re not sure why your team meeting didn’t go as planned, ask for feedback about the meeting itself, rather than about your personality or work ethic. And remember to listen carefully to what the other person has to say. Thank them for their input and let them know that you’ll take their suggestions into account.

Practice public speaking

One of the best ways to improve your communication skills is to practice public speaking. It can be nerve-wracking, but it’s an invaluable experience that will help you feel more confident when you need to speak in front of a group. Start by finding a few events or meetups in your area that focus on public speaking. Attend as many as you can, and watch how other speakers prepare and deliver their speeches. As you practice, you’ll start to get a feel for what works and what doesn’t. You’ll also learn how to deal with nerves and stay calm under pressure. And the more you speak, the better you’ll get!
