In this post, I would like to share with you what I have learned from making money online in Namibia. I will detail the knowledge that I have gained along the way so that, hopefully, it can help you on your journey. I am a university dropout who created a website that has gained more than 20,000 users and generates a passive income of more than N$12000 a month.
What I learned from making money online in Namibia
- Do it yourself
- Have a system
- Avoid disturbances
- Productive downtime
- Build a team
- Delegate
- Do it full time
- Just start
Do it yourself
When I started my website, I had to learn how to do all the tasks that were needed to run my website.
I was the web designer, marketing manager, customer consultant, social media manager, writer and researcher.
This has helped me save a lot of money from the beginning.
Have a system
I had a system in place where I had to create 2 posts every week, sometimes it became unsustainable. Every time people saw me hanging around on my personal computer they thought I was lazy and just playing games.
Sometimes people would not see me for a few days, because I had clear goals that had to be achieved every day. I had to make a plan and have a system in place that could help me research and create content faster.
Avoid disturbances
I learned that I always got rewarded in the future when I minimized daily disturbances and did anything that I could to get a lot of work done.
When I started my website I used to go MIA on my friends, I literally had to work on the coding, graphics and then marketing. At that time hanging around with my friends was not productive, I had to find ways to create content and make money online.
Productive downtime
While working, I always had this 30 to 40 minutes block of time where I had nothing to do… So I started walking around with a notebook and wrote down anything in my free time. In your case, you might be sitting in your office… You can use your spare time to draft up ideas that will help you work on something and accomplish it.
Instead of going on your phone and scrolling on social media, you can work on something productive.
If you start doing this, you will realise that you can actually get a lot of work done in your spare time.
Imagine how much time you take to scroll on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or TikTok… You will definitely get more joy when you achieve your goals and get rewarded. In my case, I know that I am happier now that one of my websites is making more than N$12000 every month.
Build a team
Starting alone has taught me a lot of things like how my website runs and how to optimize my website. It has also taught me that I do not know everything.
This has led me to hire 4 people on a part-time basis, I reach out to them when I need help on my website and they also send me content that I can put on the website.
Delegate
You should learn to delegate. To run an online business you do not only need to be a good technician, you have to be a good entrepreneur/manager that thinks ahead of time and know what is happening in the business (day to day).
You should be able to delegate tasks appropriately.
Do it full time
When the business generates enough income, you should decide on whether you want to put in all your time and effort to grow it even further
During the past 2 years, I have learned how to run a business like how my business should be structured, delegation, ownership, and how to hire/fire my employees.
Just Start
If you are contemplating starting a business or making money online, my recommendation is that you get started right away.
What are you waiting for?
Failure is a necessary part of the learning process. Therefore, you should not be afraid of failing.
How to overcome procrastination
When I started my website, I used to get more than 30 complaints every week. Users were not getting what was promised on the website, which was not the best-designed or best-structured website. Every user complained about getting errors frequently, so I had to learn from my blunders and correct them as time passed.
Whenever I look at the website now, I do not think I would have accomplished anything close to what I have now. It took all the blunders and customer complaints for me to get it better. I do not think I would have achieved it if I just sat back and planned everything out without the customers’ input.
You do not lose anything when you fail… Failing to build my website in 2014 taught me what I needed to do; it showed me what I needed to work on. Ideas do not come out fully formed; my website only became clear as I worked on it.
You can do it too!
I am a university dropout, I just started with an imperfect website and worked on it. Not a day goes by where I do not correct something on my website, I learn something new every day I wake up…
What you want to do now might not be perfect in your eyes, but my advice for you will be the same. Just go for it!
