Certificate of Origin of Motor Vehicle
A Certificate of Origin (COO) for a motor vehicle is a document that must accompany the application for first registration or registration certificate of a motor vehicle, as required by the National Road Traffic Act of 1996. The COO is issued without erasures or alterations to ensure its authenticity and accuracy.

This article provides an overview of the process of obtaining a Certificate of Origin for a motor vehicle at NaTIS, including the required information, the types of identification accepted, and the declaration of correctness.
Particulars of Motor Vehicle
The COO requires the following particulars of the motor vehicle to be provided:
- Chassis number/VIN: The unique identification number of the motor vehicle’s chassis or VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).
- Engine number: The unique identification number of the motor vehicle’s engine, if applicable.
- Make: The manufacturer or brand name of the motor vehicle.
- Series name: The specific series or model name of the motor vehicle, described in full.
- Model number and derivative: The model number and any derivative information of the motor vehicle.
- Tare (T) and gross vehicle mass (GVM) kg: The tare weight (empty weight) and gross vehicle mass (total weight including passengers, cargo, and fuel) of the motor vehicle, in kilograms.
- Net power and engine capacity kW and cm³: The net power (output power) and engine capacity (total volume of all cylinders) of the motor vehicle, in kilowatts and cubic centimeters respectively.
- Main colour: The main color of the motor vehicle, to be marked with an X, with options including white, red, blue, or other (to be specified).
Certificate Issued By
The COO requires information regarding the type of identification, identification number, and country of issue if applicable, of the entity issuing the certificate. The options for type of identification include traffic register number, National ID (National Identification Number), foreign ID, or business registration number. The COO also requires the business type and purpose of ownership to be marked with an X, with options including manufacturer, importer, builder, sold, or own use. The surname, initials, and job title at the organization of the individual declaring the information are also required.
Declaration and Signature
The individual declaring the information on the COO must sign the document and declare that the above information is correct.
For Use by Registering Authority
The registering authority will use the COO to record the register number, date of application, and official office stamp and signature of the official.
