Admission Requirements to Study MEDICINE at UNAM (studying medicine at UNAM)

To gain admission to the School of Medicine at UNAM, candidates must meet specific requirements. These include obtaining the following grades in their secondary education:

  1. Namibian Senior Secondary Certificate Ordinary Level (NSSCO): A minimum of 35 points in five subjects on the UNAM Evaluation Scale.
    • English: Minimum B symbol or higher (or 37 points with a minimum C symbol in English) on NSSCO Level, or a minimum C or higher on NSSCAS Level.
    • Biology: Minimum B symbol or higher on NSSCAS Level.
    • Mathematics: Minimum B symbol or higher on NSSCAS Level.
    • Chemistry and Physics: Minimum C symbol or higher on NSSCAS Level.

OR

  1. Namibian Senior Secondary Certificate Higher Level (NSSCH) / Namibian Senior Secondary Certificate Advanced Subsidiary Level:
    • A minimum of 35 points in five subjects on the UNAM Evaluation Scale.
    • English: Minimum B symbol or higher on NSSCO Level (or 37 points with a minimum C symbol in English), or a score of grade 3 or higher on NSSCH Level.
    • Biology (or Life Science): Minimum B symbol on NSSCO Level, or a grade 2 or higher on NSSCH Level.
    • Mathematics: Minimum B symbol or higher on NSSCO Level, or a grade 2 or higher on NSSCH Level.
    • Physical Science or Chemistry: Minimum B symbol or higher on NSSCO Level, or a grade 2 or higher on NSSCH Level.

Alternatively, applicants who have completed an undergraduate degree program in Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry, or another health-related field at a minimum of Bachelor’s or Bachelor of Technology degree level may be considered. However, the degree must be in a science field such as Biological or Medical Sciences, with an average of at least 60% over the final two completed years of study. National Diplomas, Technical Diplomas, Certificates, and similar qualifications are not eligible for entry.

For applicants with an undergraduate degree, the following science requirements apply:

  • 60% for first-year university degree level Biology (full course) or equivalent courses like Anatomy, Physiology, Zoology, Life Sciences, etc.
  • 60% for first-year university degree level Physics (half course).
  • 60% for first-year university degree level Chemistry (half course).

It’s important to note that the above three subjects (Biology, Physics, and Chemistry) must be completed at the first year of a university Bachelor’s degree or higher. Transfer students from other programs within the Faculty of Health Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, including Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing, public health, Allied health, and veterinary medicine, will need approval from the respective Associate Deans. Transfer students from other Medicine degree programs at other institutions or universities may also be considered based on availability of space and meeting the minimum UNAM points requirements.
